Une analogie originale ?
Nous trouvons trace d'une analogie Vermeer/Hopper dans un commentaire posté le 6 février 2002 sur le forum du site WetCanvas, où une certaine Renee affirme : "There's a terrific article in the March 2001 issue of Artnews comparing Edward Hopper's work to Vermeers and showing that Hopper was profoundly influenced by Vermeer.
The amount of people in their compositions ( no more than two in both cases), the distance of the subjects from the "intruder" ( as the viewer was called). Plus, a comparison of the puritan ethic espoused in the virginal appearances of Vermeer's maidens as opposed to the jaded, lonely and desperate images 300 years later by Hopper.
The light is almost the same although the psychology of the type of light each artist used was very different. Vermeer casting a beautiful warm light and Hopper a glaring light that exposed a hardened environment."
L'article évoqué (Artnews, mars 2001) est le suivant : Vermeer’s Youthful Discretion, par Walter Liedtke. Je n'ai pas pu en prendre connaissance ; en tout état de cause, il ne semble pas être directement consacré à une comparaison Vermeer/Hopper, étant ainsi résumé dans le sommaire de la revue : "Diana and Her Companions was a predictable picture for a young Delft painter of the early 1650s, but it was also personal..."
